Huvadhoo Atoll, also known as Gaafu Atoll, is the deepest atoll in the Maldives. According to Science Direct, Huvadhoo Atoll has a maximum depth of 80 metres (262 feet).
Huvadhoo Atoll is one the most southern atolls of the Maldives and is also one of the largest in area too. This atoll has a number of great dives sites, which include Nilandhoo Kandu, Hafsa Thila, Vadhoo Thila, Kaaddhedhoo Kandu and Mofzaa Thila.
By the way, a “Thila” is an underwater pinnacle, or reef structure that is completely submerged in the Maldives.
Thilas can be small enough to circumnavigate in a single dive. They are also often exposed to strong currents, which means the conditions are perfect for soft corals and sea fans to grow. These strong currents in deep waters means there is also an abundance of sea life and big marine creatures too.
These dive sites are pristine with caves, steep drop offs and beautiful underwater landscapes. Plus you’ll enjoy breath-taking coral formations and fish life.
The deep waters and strong ocean currents that flow in and out of the Huvadhoo Atoll bring with them plenty of marine life. This means there are more chances to see sharks in this Maldives atoll.
If you love diving with sharks like I do, this will be music to your ears. But always remember, when you dive you are diving with nature, and of course there are no guarantees of seeing any type of shark. But the deep waters inside the Huvadhoo Atoll (80 metresdeep no less) and from the deep waters of the Indian Ocean that surround the atoll, these provide the perfect opportunity to see sharks close at hand.
Marine life around Huvadhoo Atoll includes sharks ( which include; grey reef sharks, leopard sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks and bull sharks), manta rays, turtles, plenty of coral fish and sea life. It’s also possible to see whale sharks in May and June as well. This is when the ocean currents change direction, which causes the plankton levels increase.
The best way to enjoy the diving in this southern region is to dive from a liveaboard that visits this region.

”Great diving trip. The diving guides worked hard to fulfill our expectations. The briefings were comprehensive and dives were well organised. The diving dhoni was spacious, comfortable and well organised. All the staff of Theia was friendly and helpfull. The food was excellent and plentifull. The cabin and bathroom was clean and comfortable. This was one of the best liveboard trip I have taken part in. ”Amazing experience. We were incredibly impressed by the setup on this liveaboard. The dive boat is spacious and supports 20 people comfortably. We were part of a dive group of 5 and the smallest on our boat was 4 and most was 6. They have 11.5L, 13.5L tanks (free) and 15L for those who need it at a premium. The gear provided was well maintained. Our standard room was spacious and clean with a good en suite. The communal areas of the boat are also spacious and there was coffee and snacks available at all times. Food was great and they even regularly caught fresh fish off the edge of the boat which was eaten the same day for dinner. This was my first, however, my colleagues said how this would spoil future liveaboards. I definitely recommend this option. For transparency, we got in early and paid around $2100 and found it to be good value for money.” Recommended for: Mantas, Whalesharks and spacious rooms.

”Truly amazing above and below the water. Truly amazing from start to finish. We seen 7 species of sharks including the infamous whale shark. We had manta cleaning stations, 4 giant mantas on our first dive, donut couldn’t have started any better. The whole trip kept delivering and there is not one thing we would change. ”Outstanding liveabord experience. The Whaleshark dive is right at the top, not only did it fulfill a tick on our bucket list, it was an experience of 30 odd minutes that normally only lasts 3 or 4. All dives for us offered something different and this is what we came to do – loved every minute. Diving always makes you hungry. The food on board was excellent at every mealtime and we were very well looked after. ”Simply incredible. The crew were fantastic, very friendly and accommodating to the group. Dives groups were 4-7 and our guides were great. The boat itself is lovely, cabins clean and surprisingly spacious with ensuites. The food was great, it’s an Italian boat so lots of Italian food but some local and international fare as well. The best part though was the diving. On an 11 day/10 night itinerary from Male to Addu we saw: – Tiger Sharks – Scalloped Hammerheads – Whale Sharks – Manta Rays – Eagle Rays – Schooling grey reef and nurse sharks (hundreds) – 50+ turtles – Schooling Barracuda – Schooling tuna & jacks – Beautiful coral reefs (especially in the deep south) We also regularly stopped on remote islands and relaxed in the sun.
