There are no great white sharks in the Maldives as great whites prefer cooler waters. The waters around the Maldives are 28-30°C (82-86°F) and great white sharks prefer coastal and offshore waters with water temperatures between 12-24°C (54-75 °F) instead. The golden rule of scuba diving is to always remember to never hold your breath while ascending, because as you ascend to the surface, the pressure around you decreases and any air that you have in your lungs will expand, and could cause serious injury or even death due to lung over-expansion.
The 1 3 rule states that a diver should: Descend no more than 1/3 of their total air supply; reserve 1/3 of their total air supply for the ascent and ascend when they reach 1/3 of their total air supply.
The depth a person can dive without a wetsuit depends on various factors, such as water temperature, individual physical fitness, and diving experience. In general, cold water reduces a person’s ability to dive deeper, as the body loses heat faster, and can lead to hypothermia.
After scuba diving with a bikini under a wetsuit you’re best to wear thin non-water absorbing board shorts or synthetic shorts like the Patagonia Micro Planning shorts. Combine this with a similar fabric t-shirt and you’re good to go. Even better is to wear a waterproof neoprene bikini or swimsuit that doesn’t get wet!
You can sometimes easily fix a leaking drysuit exhaust valve by clicking the valve down by a couple of clicks. If this doesn’t work and the valve still leaks on your next dive, try taking it apart to flush it out with water in case there are any foreign objects like sand that are preventing the seal from closing.
How you keep your hair out of your face when scuba diving can either be achieved by choosing a hairstyle like braids, plaits or a pony tail to keep it under control. Or alternatively you can use something to keep it in check. This includes a long hairband or hair ties, a swimming hat, a neoprene diving hood or a headband buff. If you have hair extensions, this poses a similar problem and you can use these same solutions, but also there’s a hair glove that acts as a sleeve that covers the hair extension. For men with facial hair and a moustache, you need to think about avoiding a leaking mask and use silicone grease to avoid this.
Scuba diving in a drysuit isn’t hard at all, in fact it’s extremely easy. It’s just different to diving in a wetsuit. The first time you put your drysuit on it might feel a bit strange, but after just a few dives it will become like second nature. Using a drysuit in colder waters is so much better than diving in a wetsuit. Before long you won’t even be thinking about it and you’ll be very pleased you made the switch.
How likely is a drysuit feet first ascent? The truth is that it is possible, it does happen and it could happen to you. But if you understand why feet first ascents happen in the first place, you can take steps to prevent it from happening at all. You don’t necessarily need to use drysuit ankle weights to avoid a feet first ascent in a drysuit, but some scuba divers prefer to use them to avoid a runaway ascent with floaty feet! How far you can go underwater when you’re snorkelling depends on a few factors. The first of these factors is how long you can hold your breath for. The longer you can hold your breath, the deeper you can go. The second factor governing how deep you can go underwater when you’re snorkelling is your ears. As you dive down below the surface the water pressure increases. As a result of this increased water pressure, your ears will need to be equalised. If you’re not able to equalise the pressure in your ears as you dive down, this will limit how far underwater you can go. A third factor about how far underwater you can go is your mindset. Not everyone has the confidence to dive down deep and it can take time to master this and to build up the necessary confidence.
What helps with anxiety when learning scuba diving includes preventative measures like finding the right scuba instructor to begin with and finding easy shallow dives to build your experience and hone your skills. To avoid anxiety when you dive you should take things slowly and at your pace. But also, never be afraid to say no to the dive.
