One thing I would recommend is to not scrimp on your regulator, as this is your life support system.
I’d certainly recommend going on a few dives with a dive company, use their equipment and especially their regulator to help you decide on which one to buy.
Most regulators have a similar feel when you breath from them, but some are nicer to breath from than others. The only way to find this out is to try it out underwater.
