The truth is there is a lot of debris in the ocean. A lot of it is laying at a shallow depth, also in the coral reef itself. Many pieces of plastic are mistaken for food by marine life and end up in their stomach.
Especially turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, which some species eat, or they get entangled in fishing line or plastic waste.
The clean up is every quarter, so if you happen to be visiting Bonaire at the time, why not join in the fun and do a good deed at the same time.

That is a great idea. We recently opened a Scuba Dive shop in Komodo National Park and there is still quite a bit of plastic around many of the beaches. We are starting a clean up program very soon as well as school program for education. At the moment we can not offer free scuba diving in Komodo but hopefully we can do some discount in the future.
