When I visited South Africa, on my way up the Garden Route, I stopped in a place called Plettenberg Bay.

I stayed in this lovely bed and breakfast that overlooked the bay.

Whilst having breakfast, I watched a large pod of about 50 dolphins swimming and playing in the surf.

I decided that I would swim out to them after I’d had my breakfast.

I did just that and the dolphins came over to check me out, it was wonderful. Whilst swimming with them, I noticed a hand glider flying up and down the beach.

Later that day, after I’d been diving off another nearby beach with a group of divers, I went for a drink after the dive with the group.

I recounted my story of swimming with the dolphins in Plettenberg Bay, but it turned out that one of the group happened to be the pilot of the hand glider I’d been watching when swimming with the dolphins.

A bit of a funny coincidence, but that wasn’t the funniest part. The pilot asked me if I realised that I had also been surrounded by hammerhead sharks too.

As he flew over me he could see the hammerheads in the water, where I was totally oblivious.

I’m not sure if that was good or bad, but I did wish I’d taken my mask and snorkel with me. Although it may have been a bit of a shock to look down at hammerheads.
